Former Oregon Signee Ray Kasongo Drawing Interest (UPDATED)

Ray KasongoRay Kasongo, the 6-foot-10 power forward who had originally signed with Oregon, is now gaining interest from a number of Division 1 teams, including No. 1 Kentucky.

The Toronto native is now at the College of Southern Idaho where he is averaging 6.1 points and 4.7 rebounds for a team that is 30-2 and headed to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., March 16-21, under head coach Jared Phay.

“The season is going pretty well,” Kasongo told SNY.tv. “We are 30-2 and we just won the Regional tournament to go to Hutch in Kansas.”

Kasongo said the schools recruiting him include Indiana, Texas, Florida, Iowa, Oregon, Wichita State and LSU.

Kasongo also told SNY.tv on Friday the he spoke at length on Thursday with Kentucky assistant Kenny Payne, who knows Kasongo from his time at Pikeville (KY) High, where he transferred to from Canada in order to gain greater visibility.

“We just sort of caught up and he wanted to know how everything was,” Kasongo said of Payne. “They seem interested and I am definitely interested in them. What I really like about them is how they use their bigs.”

Kentucky is involved with a slew of uncommitted 2015 bigs, including Thon Maker, Cheick Diallo, Thomas Bryant, Caleb Swanigan, Ivan Rabb and Stephen Zimmerman.

Phay believes Kasongo has come on strong this season.

“Ray Kasongo is developing very well and starting to reach his potential, which is extremely high,” Phay said.
