NBA: Boston Celtics at Memphis GrizzliesBy CHRIS RUSSELL & ADAM ZAGORIA

The Boston Celtics have recalled James Young from the Maine Red Claws of the NBA D-League.

The 6-foot-7 Young scored a game-high 25 points on 9-for-15 shooting and posted 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in 35 minutes of action against the Texas Legends on Wednesday.

Young, the 17th pick of the 2014 NBA Draft, has appeared in five games for the Celtics this season, averaging 2.2 points per game.

Cronin

Cincinnati announced Friday that head coach Mick Cronin will continue to oversee the men’s basketball program in an advisory role for the remainder of the 2014-15 Bearcats season while dealing with a non-life threatening vascular condition known as arterial dissection.

For precautionary reasons, Cronin will not coach the Bearcats during practices or games this season, but will continue running the program, directing the coaching staff, game planning and recruiting.

“I have the utmost confidence in our coaching staff and players that we will continue to develop as a team and play Bearcats basketball,” said Cronin, who is in his ninth season at the helm. “This program is bigger than any coach or player. I don’t want this to be a distraction but instead want the focus to be on the growth and support of this team.

4_2962451-1The New Year has just begun and it’s already been good for Virginia and head coach Tony Bennett.

The No. 3 Cavaliers landed a verbal pledge from 6-foot-10 2016 power forward Sacha Killeya-Jones of Lynchburg (VA) Virginia Episcopal School.

“Proud to be a an official UVa commit!” he Tweeted.

Killeya-Jones also reportedly considered Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Georgetown and VCU. He becomes Virginia’s third 2016 commit, following New Rochelle (N.Y.) Iona Prep point guard Ty Jerome and Indianapolis (IN) Lawrence Central point guard Kyle Guy.

UCLA coach Steve Alford watched Jaylen Brown this week at the Les Schwab Invitational in Portland, Ore., and the visit made an impression on the 6-foot-7 wing from Marietta (GA) Wheeler.

“Coach Steve is a great coach,” Brown told OregonLive.com. “I know they are in busy seasons with their guys. For a head coach to come out, it means a lot. I haven’t seen too many head coaches come out. I’ve seen Roy Williams (North Carolina), Steve Alford (UCLA), Mark Fox (Georgia), Brian Gregory (Georgia Tech), that’s about it though.”

Brown is also considering Kansas, Kentucky and Michigan and has said he plans to visit North Carolina and Michigan going forward.

Ivan RabbIvan Rabb, the 6-foot-10 2015 big man from Oakland (CA) Bishop O’Dowd and the Oakland Soldiers, will visit Arizona on Saturday, as previously reported here.

The Wildcats host Arizona State in Pac-12 action on Sunday.

“We have an Arizona date for Jan. 3,” his mother, Tami, previously told SNYtv, adding that they plan to visit all five schools “after January” when her work schedule slows down.

“We hear from every school on a regular basis,” she said.
