GilesAfter Harry Giles and his Wesleyan Christian teammates played the North Carolina JV team on Saturday, Dick Vitale called it an “unfair advantage” during ESPN’s broadcast of the Louisville-North Carolina game.

Vitale said North Carolina was gaining a recruiting edge by hosting the 6-foot-10 Giles, whom Vitale called a “special” talent.

Giles Tweeted before the game: “Game today against UNC JV team at The Dean Dome so if you’re in the area everybody come out and support!”

PADUCAH, Ky. — Thomas Bryant says he loves playing in Kentucky.

“I just love the basketball atmosphere,” the five-star forward from Huntington Prep (W.V.) said Saturday at the McCracken County Mustang Madness. “Everyone loves the game of basketball here in Kentucky. With the Kentucky Wildcats, they come out to support them and when they hear good high school players are coming, they come out to see them and show their support.”

Kentucky head coach John Calipari and assistant Kenny Payne on Saturday watched Bryant go for 33 points, 14 rebounds, 4 blocks and one steal in a 72-66 loss to Callaway (MS), which got 35 points from Malik Newman. The Wildcats jumped into Bryant’s recruiting late, offering late in the 2014 year, joining Syracuse, Indiana and Missouri as Bryant’s final four.

But Bill Self and Kansas are also trying to get in the mix, two sources confirmed to SNYtv.

In recent days, Caleb Swanigan has had a home visit with Duke and has attended a Michigan State game, but he remains wide open in his recruitment.

“He’s still going through the process,” Roosevelt Barnes, Swanigan’s guardian, told SNY.tv by phone. “He’s been watching a lot of college basketball on television, but he’s focused on his high school season. It probably won’t be until after the season that he makes a decision. It will probably be sometime in April.

PADUCAH, KY. – Malik Newman scored a game-high 34 points and earned MVP honors in front of Kansas head coach Bill Self and assistant Kurtis Townsend just one day after the Jayhawks beat out Kentucky and Illinois, securing a verbal commitment from Villa Angela-St Joseph’s (OH) Carlton Bragg.

Newman said he was a bit surprised by Bragg’s decision.

“Kind of, but not really,” Newman stated. “I think Kansas does a really good job of developing big men. With him being a stretch four and a guy that can really score the ball, I think it was a good decision for him.”

Tai Wynyard, a 2016 power forward from Rangitoto College in New Zealand, is set to visit Kentucky, Villanova and Texas next week, sources tell SNY.tv.

Wynyard begins his time in Lexington on Sunday, before heading to Villanova on Tuesday. He will finish his trip in Austin, arriving on Friday and leaving Sunday.

The 16-year-old helped lead his team to the Auckland premier championship, where he scored 24 points and grabbed seven boards.

St Pat'sThe New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) and St. Patrick High School in Elizabeth, N.J., issued the following statements Friday after the NJSIAA banned St. Pat’s from the New Jersey state basketball tournament following a meeting Friday morning between the two parties.

The ban comes after five St. Pat’s players were ejected following an incident during a Dec. 29 game against Redondo Union (CA) in Torrey Pines, CA.

One of the top players in Florida, Juwan Durham is ready to show that he is the man.

Not only at Tampa Prep, but in the state.

Durham, currently averaging 23.1 points, 10.6 rebounds and 5.1 blocks per game, has continued to draw significant attention over the past year after playing with both Team Breakdown during the summer, as well as leading Tampa Prep to the State Championship game last year.

This year, he is looking to do the same, and he has done so up to this point, leading the Terrapins to a 14-1 record. Most recently in a 72-49 win over district rival Brooks DeBartolo, Durham tallied 34 points on 14-15 from the field, 17 rebounds and 10 blocks.

“Season is going well,” Durham told SNY.tv after the win. “Fourteen and one right now, and just looking toward the next game. We just know that we have to stay focused on that prize, we have to focus on the big picture.”
