    By mid-January, Chris Holtmann will likely either be named the Butler head coach for the remainder of the season or he will return to his former status as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs.

    Imagine that.

    A man who this week led his team to wins over No. 5 North Carolina and Big East heavyweight Georgetown could be an assistant coach by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

    “Obviously, your’e human and you wonder [about the future] but I’ve tried not to focus too much on it,” Holtmann, a former head coach at Gardner-Webb who was elevated to interim head coach at Butler when Brandon Miller took a medical leave of absence, told SNY.tv by phone from the Bahamas after the Bulldogs beat Georgetown, 64-58 Friday in the Battle 4 Atlantis to improve to 5-1 on the season.

    (When the AP poll came out on Monday, the Bulldogs were ranked No. 23 nationally.)

    Cal UNCKentucky and UCLA will begin a home-and-home series in 2015 that will replace Kentucky’s series with North Carolina during that stretch.

    The Kentucky-UNC series will resume in 2017.

    Kentucky, North Carolina and UCLA are also part of the CBS Sports Classic which launches this year and also includes Ohio State. On Dec. 20 at the United Center, UCLA plays Kentucky and UNC gets Ohio State. The CBS Sports Classic will then move to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in 2015 and to Las Vegas in 2016, when Kentucky will face North Carolina in that event.

    DezMaryland senior guard/forward Dez Wells sustained a broken bone in his right wrist and is expected to miss four weeks, head coach Mark Turgeon announced Friday.

    Wells, who suffered the injury during Maryland’s 72-63 win over No. 13 Iowa State at the CBE Classic, had surgery Friday morning in Baltimore.

    The Terps host Monmouth Friday night.

    “Dez has been playing at a very high level and we will certainly miss our team leader,” Turgeon said. “I am extremely disappointed for Dez because I know how hard he has worked in the offseason to prepare for his senior season.”

    NEW YORK — Gonzaga freshman guard Josh Perkins is out indefinitely with a broken jaw after being kicked in the head near the end of the No. 10 Bulldogs’ 88-76 win over Georgia Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

    He will have his jaw wired shut due to the fracture and is ruled out indefinitely. There is no timetable for his return.

    Gonzaga will meet St. John’s Friday in the NIT Season Tip-Off championship game at Madison Square Garden.

    “We are praying for a speedy recovery for Josh,” head coach Mark Few said. “He’s a tough kid, and in good spirits today. We know he’ll be eager to get back on the court as soon as he can be.”

    NEW YORK — The Big East has a lot to be thankful for.

    Through Wednesday’s action, the Big East is now 39-3 on the season with wins over five ranked teams: Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, VCU and Oklahoma.

    Late Wednesday, Georgetown beat No. 18 Florida, 66-65, to advance to the second round of the Battle 4 Atlantis, where they will face No. 2 Wisconsin on Thanksgiving.

    Earlier Wednesday night, St. John’s got past Minnesota, 70-61, to advance to the title game of the NIT Season Tip-Off, where they will meet No. 10 Gonzaga on Friday.

    NEW YORK – D’Angelo Harrison has boldly stated that this season is a “complete failure” if St. John’s doesn’t make the NCAA Tournament, and that Wednesday’s NIT semifinal against Minnesota is one of the biggest games of his career. 

    St. John’s did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, but if it is to do so for the first time in the careers of Harrison and the rest of this senior class, Wednesday was a step in the right direction.

    Harrison’s 4-point play from the right corner with 2:22 to play in the game highlighted an 12-0 run late in the second half as St. John’s picked up a quality non-conference win, 70-61 over head coach Richard Pitino and reigning postseason NIT champion Minnesota.

    Newman won’t decide until after April 15, the NCAA deadline for college players to declare for the NBA, his father told Paul Biancardi of ESPN.com.

    The NBA has its own deadline for college players to declare, which follows the NCAA deadline.

    The 6-foot-4 Newman is considering Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi State and N.C. State, among others.
