Defending Champ Murray Could Meet No. 1 Djokovic in Wimbledon Semifinals; Federer, Nadal on Collision Course

Defending Wimbledon champion Andy Murray could meet top seed Novak Djokovic in one Wimbledon semifinal, while longtime rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are seeded to meet in the other.

The draw was made on Friday.

Murray last year became the first British man in 77 years to win Wimbledon when he took out Djokovic in straight sets in the final.

Federer has won Wimbledon seven times, with the last of his all-time best 17 Major titles coming there in 2012.

Djokovic captured the Wimbledon crown in 2011 and Nadal in 2010, meaning each member of the Big Four has taken home the title in the last four years.

Between them, the Big Four have won 35 of the last 37 Grand Slam titles.

Quarterfinals pairings could pit Djokovic against No. 6 Tomas Berdych, No. 3 Murray against No. 7 David Ferrer, No. 4 Federer against his Swiss countryman, No. 5 seed Stan Wawrinka, the Australian Open champ, and No. 2 Nadal against No. 8 Milos Raonic, the big-serving Canadian.

Murray opens his title defence against Belgium’s David Goffin. The Scot would then face either Pablo Andujar or Blaz Rola, with a seeded third round against Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.

Djokovic, who pulled out of a recent grasscourt exhibition and has not yet played a match this year on grass, is looking to add to his 2011 Wimbledon triumph and opens his bid against Andrey Golubev. The Serbian, who was runner-up at Roland Garros two weeks ago, would meet either Radek Stepanek – who beat Murray at The Queen’s Club – or Pablo Cuevas in the second round and is seeded to take on No. 31 Vasek Pospisil in the third round. No. 14 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a likely fourth-round opponent for Djokovic.

After being stunned in the second round last year by Sergiy Stakhovsky, Federer will open against Paolo Lorenzi, and could face Julien Benneteau or Gilles Muller in the second round. Benneteau has given Federer problems in the past at Wimbledon.

Nadal, the champion at Wimbledon in 2008 and ’10, could face a rematch in the second round with Lukas Rosol, who famously beat the Spaniard in the 2012 second round. Nadal could meet the towering Ivo Karlovic in the third round and could face the returning Richard Gasquet or Gael Monfils in the fourth round.

Wimbledon begins Monday on ESPN.
