Brandon Childress has something to prove. So far, he is well on his way to making his point.
A 6-foot 2016 guard, Childress will be running the point next year for Wesleyan Christian Academy (N.C.), transferring from East Forsyth (N.C.) to play alongside top prospect Harry Giles.
“It’s really exciting,” Childress told SNY.tv. “I’m looking forward to playing alongside of Harry and everyone over there. I feel like I can learn a lot. I honestly can’t wait. Coach (Keith) Gatlin played at Maryland and in the pros, so he can teach me about that. I can learn so much from him, really about everything, so I’m very excited.”
Childress currently has offers from Charlotte and UNC-Wilmington, but many other schools have been calling, and it is possible that they could be waiting for the June 15th deadline to extend offers.
“UNC, East Carolina, Davidson, VCU, Kansas State, Wake Forest, Clemson, Tulsa, Columbia, Richmond, Virginia Tech are showing interest right now,” Childress said. “The biggest thing that I am looking for is a place that I can call home, and call a family, even after I leave.”
The son of former Wake Forest star and current Demon Deacon assistant coach Randolph Childress, Brandon says that a big key in his growth is his ability to shoot the ball from deep, and he showcased that in the Nike Memorial Classic in Georgia, where he had three games where he tallied 30, 28 and 20 points in the span of 2 days.
“Last year, I shot about 33 percent from 3,” Childress said. “This year, I’m shooting closer to 45 percent this summer. It has to do a lot with my dad, he’s big on fundamentals. I feel like I’ve improved that aspect of my game a lot, and it should improve even more for next year.”
Childress is a scrappy point guard that is a threat from all levels on the offensive side, but perhaps his greatest trait is his always give it 100 percent.
“People know me as Randolph’s son,” Childress said. “I don’t want them to say oh that’s Little Randolph over there. Nah, that’s Brandon Childress.”
