Say this about Marshall Henderson.
He certainly made an otherwise bland Monday morning on Twitter interesting.
The former Ole Miss guard — who has had multiple run-ins with the law and battled drug issues — Tweeted several homophobic comments directed at Michael Sam and ESPN for showing Sam and his boyfriend kissing after Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams.
The 6-foot-2 Henderson, whose college career is over, leaving him likely playing in Europe, beat a hasty retreat shortly thereafter and told the world it was for a psychological “study.”
For his first Tweet on Monday, Henderson wrote:
“Boycotting sportscenter til this michael sam nasty ass shit is off …. My brothers are 7 and 11 and saw that!!! #SICKENING”
He added:
“Im sorry, but I DO NOT AGREE WHATSOEVER that should be shown to where innocent eyes can see!!!”
Henderson understandably caught hell on Twitter and then responded with:
“POINT #3: Who is the worse person, me for what I said or any of the HUNDREDS who just cursed me?? LOL uh oh… #ThisIsFun”
ESPN showed Henderson’s Tweets on SportsCenter and Hannah Storm was understandably taken aback by them.
Ole Miss AD Ross Bjork also took to Twitter to condemn Henderson’s Tweets:
“I’m extremely disappointed & we do not condone the statements made by our former bball player. We believe in respect & dignity for all……”
Bjork added:
“We use significant resources to educate our student-athletes about respect & dignity for all people & unfortunately not everyone gets it….”
Henderson has since tried to backtrack, Tweeting a slew of comments about how his Tweets were intended for a psychology “study” involving one of his friends, whom Henderson said is gay.
“One of my best friends, WHO IS GAY, is about to graduate in psychology, asked me to say these things so he can have responses … TBC”
“The point of his study was to see how people react when others say things or act a certain way against another group of people … TBC”
He added:
“THANK YOU MICHAEL SAM FOR STANDING UP FOR YOU AND MAKING THIS WHOLE PROJECT POSSIBLE!!! TRYING TO BRIDGE THE GAP ONE DAY AT A TIME!!”
And:
“THANK YOU ALL!! HAVE A WONDERFUL MONDAY”
