Las Vegas Wing Ray Smith Looking to Trim List Soon

By CHIP MILLER & ADAM ZAGORIA

DUNCANVILLE, TX –– Las Vegas High School wing Ray Smith is looking to trim his list soon.

“Coming up sometime probably in the next month or so,” Smith said at the recent Adidas stop. “Then I will probably be committing sometime soon.”

Smith listed a slew of schools as being in contact right now: UCLA, Arizona, Texas, Georgetown, Arizona State, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, UNLV, San Diego State, UConn and New Mexico.

But Dream Vision director Clay Williams told SNY.tv that UCLA, Arizona and Louisville are “recruiting him the hardest.”

Smith recently had a home visit with Arizona head man Sean Miller and assistant Damon Stoudamire.

“Pretty much just look at our school, take our school into consideration,” Smith said was the message conveyed. “They showed me the new stadium going to be built.”

He also had home visits with UCLA head man Steve Alford and Texas head coach Rick Barnes.

On Texas, “Really just sat down and talked about me really. He got to know me a little bit better. It was cool.”

On UCLA, “UCLA, same thing, tradition is disgusting, they’re really good. But with their fans, they’re more like ‘Oh, we got this.’ You know, they’re more relaxed, they’re not as arrogant.”

Bluebloods Duke and Kentucky are also in the mix.

On Duke, “I like their tradition, definitely. They have a tradition of basketball. When you think about Duke, you don’t think of their football team or their volleyball team, you think of their basketball team. You think of Coach K, you know. So definitely a tradition and their fans I can only imagine are just disgusting, you know really arrogant, but that’s what I love.:

On Kentucky, “Coach [John] Calipari. When you think Kentucky, you think Calipari. Again, another school where you don’t think football or volleyball or soccer, you think basketball. Their tradition has to be amazing. They have a lot of one and done, you also think Harrison twins. One of them had a pretty big shot for them this year.”

Smith said he’s looking for an “arrogant” school, presumably one that’s confident.

“The crowd arrogance,” he said. “I like an arrogant school. My high school is pretty arrogant. We represent to the fullest. Tradition in their school. How they play, of course I like running teams. The West coast runs more but some East Coast teams run also, Midwest they run a little bit. That’s pretty much the main things. The way they play, their tradition and how they represent themselves.”
