Nearly 80 NBA personnel are expected to watch diaper dandies Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle and Jabari Parker in the Champions Classic on Tuesday night in Chicago.

Media coordinator Charley Green told SNY.tv that 73 NBA credentials have been issued, and that doesn’t include the Chicago Bulls who don’t have to go through Green because the United Center is their home arena.

“Probably around 80 scouts in total. This thing blew up after Wiggins committed,” Green told SNY.tv.

Memphis landed JUCO guard Avery Woodson on Saturday.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound guard chose Memphis over Boise State, Gonzaga, Arkansas and Ole Miss.

“First off, he is a super player but an even better person and student,” East Mississippi coach Mark White told SNY.tv. “He is strong and athletic and is a big time shooter from anywhere. He has great feel for the game with a high basketball IQ.

Jahlil Okafor will be in attendance Tuesday night when his two top suitors, Duke and Kansas, meet in the Champions Classic at the United Center.

“Going to the Kansas vs Duke game on Tuesday. Can not wait!” he Tweeted.

There is no indication that Okafor will make a decision based on who wins the game, but, ironically, the NCAA early signing period starts the following day and runs Nov. 13-20.

The Champions Classic features a doubleheader in which No. 4 Duke meets No. 5 Kansas and No. 1 Kentucky faces No. 2 Michigan State.

NEW YORK Niels Giffey, a senior from Berlin, Germany, had averaged 3.1 points in 99 games for the UConn Huskies entering  the 2012-13 season.

But after a summer in which the lanky 6-foot-7 forward excelled playing for the German National Team in the EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia, Giffey looks like a new player.

In a season-opening 78-77 win over Maryland Friday night, Giffey had 13 points and went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, displaying the sweet shooting stroke that brought him so much success over the summer.  Giffey said that his time spent with the national team—five games in which he averaged over 9 points and went 7-of-10 from deep—had a strong effect on him.

“It changed me a lot,” Giffey said.  “It really changed my whole mindset.”

NEW YORK — The Connecticut Huskies started their 2013-14 season in nail-biting fashion on Friday night with a 78-77 win over Maryland at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

While the game was notable in that the Terrapins closed what was once a 17-point second-half deficit all the way down to 1 with seconds remaining and then survived only when Maryland guard Dez Wells’ last-second jumper didn’t go down, it also marked a fresh start for UConn basketball.

The Huskies were, of course, barred from postseason play last year as a result of the program’s low Academic Progress Rate scores.  UConn became the first team from a Bowl Championship Series conference to be punished under the NCAA’s recently amended A.P.R. score policy, which requires program’s to have an average four-year score above 900 or an average two year score above 930. So while the Huskies finished 20-10, their sanctions precluded them from participating in either the Big East or NCAA tournaments.

When Adam Silver begins calling names next June in the 2014 NBA Draft, you should expect to hear several of these monikers called out right off the top.

Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle, Jabari Parker and Aaron Gordon.

You may have heard that as many as six NBA teams are tanking the season — to one degree or another — to draft these guys next June.

The Big 4 Diaper Dandies did some damage right off the tip during the 2013-14 season-openers, and several will matchup this Tuesday night at the United Center in Chicago in the Champions Classic.
