Memphis landed JUCO guard Avery Woodson on Saturday.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound guard chose Memphis over Boise State, Gonzaga, Arkansas and Ole Miss.
“First off, he is a super player but an even better person and student,” East Mississippi coach Mark White told SNY.tv. “He is strong and athletic and is a big time shooter from anywhere. He has great feel for the game with a high basketball IQ.
“But he is a great defender as well, which the Memphis coaches love about him. He will fit in great with their style of play.”
Woodson is the third JUCO player to commit to Memphis, joining forwards Trashon Burrell and Chris Hawkins, along with incoming freshman Dominic Magee.
“Coach (Josh) Pastner says I’m a player,” Woodson told John Martin of the Memphis Commercial-Appeal a couple days before making his decision. “He said I’ll be able to play anywhere with the rest of the guards and that he wouldn’t just stick me in the corner to shoot.”
The Tigers’ backcourt will be losing Chris Crawford, Joe Jackson, Michael Dixon III and Geron Johnson after the 2013-2014 season, but will be returning Rashawn Powell, Anthony Cole, Nick King and Markel Crawford along with incomers Woodson and Magee.
