Jeff Newberry’s Player Blog No. 2

Jeff Newberry of New Mexico Junior College is one of the top junior college guards in the nation. An Atlanta native, he will be contributing periodically to ZAGSBLOG this year. Here’s his second entry.

Hey guys, Jeff Newberry of New Mexico Junior College.

Just going to give you guys a brief rundown on my recruiting for now due to a lot of people wanting to know where I’m at in the process. I now have a final five of UConn, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and LSU, in no particular order. That’s my final five. Nobody else is getting in the mix.

It is now the period where Division 1 coaches can come in and legally see me workout and play pick up.

I’ve been in contact with a number of coaches such as Tubby Smith (Texas Tech) , Kevin Ollie (UConn) , Travis Ford (Oklahoma State) and Glynn Cyprien (Texas A&M).

I recently had an official visit set up to The University Of Memphis but I cancelled due to me wanting to explore other options. Some assumed it was due to the commitment of another kid but that was never the case. I’m not afraid to compete wherever I go, I embrace competing day in and day out.

My most recent visit to LSU was a great one in which I see them breaking my top 5 list when I release it in mid-October.

The official visit to UConn is in the works, I’m just trying to work around my schools’ workout schedule, and come to a set date with Coach Ollie.

The Oklahoma State visit is still set as planned (October 18th-20th) but it may be pushed up due to me wanting to make a decision a little earlier. Me and Coach Cyprien have some history from his days at the University of Memphis and they indeed run a great program at A&M.

I’m honestly just enjoying this process, and talking it over with my mentor Patrice Days, and my little sister Diamond DeShields, who is this past year’s Naismith Player of the Year, and also played in the McDonald’s All American Game. She has a very busy schedule also as she prepares for her freshman season at The University Of North Carolina, but we make time to talk every day and discuss my options in full detail.

Again thanks for everyone’s support in this process, and I hope to make a decision in the next month here. Thank you for you guys time. you can follow me on twitter @Newberry_22 and also instagram @newberry_22. You guys can also follow Diamond Deshields @DDeShields23 . *I Silence All Critics*
