Ed Cooley is now half way to the “Friar Four.”

The Providence coach on Thursday landed a verbal pledge from Paschal Chukwu, the 7-foot-1 center from Fairfield (CT) Prep, who chose the Friars over St. Joe’s, where his sister attends.

SNY.tv reported Wednesday that Chukwu was down to Providence and St. Joe’s.

“I’ve known coach Cooley for three years,” Chukwu told the Providence Journal, referring to Cooley’s time as coach at Fairfield. “I’ve gotten to know them really well. Providence is a program on the rise and I’m looking forward to playing for coach Cooley.”

NEW YORK — Tyus Jones will take the first of his official visits this weekend, when he and his good friend Jahlil Okafor trip to Baylor.

It is the first of three officials the point guard/center duo will take together, as they are also slated to visit Kansas on Oct. 18 and Duke on Oct. 25.

“We’re talking quite often,” Jones told SNY.tv in the above interview at the Elite 24. “We have three visits set up at the same time. We’re visiting Baylor, Kansas and Duke together. So talk quite often about it and excited to take our officials and to keep going with the process.”

NEW YORK — Count Johnny Mac among those “praying” for a Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal quarterfinal next Wednesday night at the US Open.

“I’m praying for it,” McEnroe, the seven-time Major winner, said Thursday on ESPN. “They’ve never played at the US Open. It would be absolutely massive. It would be similar to that [Pete] Sampras – [Andre] Agassi [quarterfinal] match [in 2001].”

Ever since the draw came out, tennis fans have been eagerly anticipating a matchup between Federer, the five-time Open champ and the No. 7 seed, and Nadal, the No. 2 seed and 2010 U.S. Open champ.

Federer is the all-time leader with 17 Major titles, while Nadal owns 12. The two legends have met in every Major except Flushing Meadows.
