Ahmed to Iona; Cooper to Wagner

Bashir Ahmed, a 6-foot-6, 182-pound wing from Bronx John F. Kennedy High School, committed to Iona Monday while on a visit.

“I verbally committed,” he told SNY.tv. “I think Iona fit me perfectly. Out of all the schools I got, I think Iona fit me the most.”

Ahmed also helds offers from Norfolk State, Morgan State, Hofstra, FIU, Buffalo and Manhattan, he said.

“[Iona] is going to let me run the one, the two and I’m going to have more freedom,” he said. “It fits my style as a player and a everything.”

Ahmed led the PSAL in scoring last year at 25 points per game and scored 10 Saturday when Team NYC beat Team USA in the Big Strick Classic at the Gauchos Gym.

Ahmed is Iona’s second 2014 commit, following Najeal Young of Kirkwood (Iowa) Community College, a 6-5 left-hander from Milwaukee.

COOPER TO WAGNER

Joe “Jojo” Cooper, a 6-foot, 190-pound guard, from Tatnall (DE) High, verbally committed to Wagner Monday.

A tough, hard-nosed attacking guard on both ends of the floor, Cooper also had offers from Monmouth and Wagner.

“Wagner College had the total package for me,” Cooper told SNY.tv. “A challenging and innovative academic program, and an energetic and supportive athletic team. Another plus was the peaceful and beautiful campus.

“I am excited about to support the team with leadership, my defensive drive and my ability to put my teammates into position to make winning plays.”
