BOSTON — It has been more than a year since both Derrick Rose and Iman Shumpert went down with ACL injuries during last year’s NBA playoffs.
The date was April 28, 2012.
Now, more than 12 months later, Rose will remain on the sidelines tonight when the Chicago Bulls face the Nets in a Game 7 in Brooklyn.
Shumpert, meantime, has been back since January and played arguably the best game of his young career as the Knicks ousted the Celtics, 88-80, in Game 6 for their first playoff series win since 2000.
“Shumpert tonight was their best player…Those were big plays,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said after Shumpert went for 17 points, including 3-for-3 from the arc, to go with six rebounds and two steals in the win.
Allen Baez remains one of the last point guards on the board in the Class of 2013.
The 6-foot-3, 178-pound Baez out of Miami (FL) High has been hearing from Rutgers, West Virginia, St. Bonaventure and Stanford, among others. He will visit Rutgers Tuesday.
“I have been debating whether to go prep or not,” he told SNY.tv. “Lots of high majors have expressed interest as a 2014. But my recruiting has picked up lately as a 2013.”
One day after SNY.tv reported that former Rhode Island forward Jonathan Holton had verbally committed to West Virginia on Sunday, the school made the signing official.
The 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward signed a grant-in-aid to play for coach Bob Huggins.
Holton also considered Memphis, Maryland and Southern Miss but never visited any of those.
“I chose West Virginia because it was the best spot for me in that they needed a guy with energy who can rebound and score right away,” Holton told SNY.tv Sunday.
Marial Shayok is one of the most athletic wings in the Class of 2014, and his recruitment is picking up.
Yet the 6-foot-6, 200-pound Canadian says a few schools have put in the most work so far.
“All of my schools are giving an effort but Villanova, Boston College and Providence have been recruiting me the longest,” Shayok told SNY.tv.
As reported here, Shayok, who plays for coach Joe Mantegna at Blair (N.J.) Academy, also recently picked up offers from Minnesota, Rutgers and La Salle.
Shayok plays with the CIA Bounce AAU team and also hopes to make the Canadian U19 team for this summer’s FIBA U19 World Championship for Men, which runs June 27-July 7 in Prague.
After guiding Sports U to the semifinals of the Philly Jam Fest last Sunday, the 2014 St. Joe’s-Metuchen guard spent the next few days adding to his growing list of potential suitors.
The 6-foot-3 Baldwin landed an offer from Virginia Tech on Monday followed by one from Penn State on Wednesday. On Thursday Rutgers coach Eddie Jordan called Baldwin to give him his third offer of the week. And on Saturday Minnesota coach Richard Pitino offered.
