Bishop Daniels is ready for a new start.
The onetime Miami guard pledged to new Rutgers coach Eddie Jordan on Tuesday and will suit up beginning in 2014, when the Scarlet Knights join the Big Ten.
“I’ve been recruited by the assistant coach Van Macon and I was recruited by Mike Rice when he was there after I decided to leave Miami,” Daniels told SNY.tv.
“The whole time I just felt comfortable with them. They made me feel like I was a part of their family from Day One.”
Daniels has never met Jordan in person, but Jordan kept Macon and associate head coach David Cox on staff to help him recruit.
“I never really met with him face-to-face,” Daniels said of Jordan. “I talk to him over the phone.”
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Daniels is currently at ASA College in Brooklyn and will have one more year there next season.
“Bishop is a big, versatile guard who can contribute at both the one and the two spots,” ASA coach Kenny Wilcox told SNY.tv. “He is extremely athletic, can shoot from three and off the dribble mid-range very effectively, and is very committed to improving.”
Originally a member of the Class of 2011, he committed to Miami out of Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God, choosing the Hurricanes over Rutgers, Tennessee, Colorado and UNC-Charlotte.
After a redshirt season, he left Miami in December 2012 for what he called “personal” reasons.
“I had a lot going on,” he said. “I was dealing with some personal issues. It just wasn’t working.”
He landed at ASA in February and now has one more full year there before heading to Rutgers next year.
A combo guard, he said he will play whatever role Jordan needs of him.
“Wherever I fall in his system is where I’ll be playing at,” he said.
Looking head, he’s hoping to build something as Rutgers joins the Big Ten.
“I’m happy to be a part of the Rutgers family,” he said. “We plan on building this thing up and making it big time.”
