St. John’s coach Steve Lavin will not coach in Thursday’s game at Louisville following the death of his father, Albert “Cap” Lavin, this past weekend, the school announced.

Lavin missed the Syracuse game on Sunday when he flew home to San Francisco to be with his family.

Assistant Rico Hines coached the team in an 77-58 loss to No. 6 Syracuse.

St. John’s is 15-9 overall, 7-5 in the Big East. They have won six of eight.

“The Lavin family is grateful for the heartfelt encouragement, prayers and support that we have received since our father’s passing,” Lavin Tweeted Tuesday.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — LeBron James may have sewn up the MVP award with his play over the last five games, but Carmelo Anthony isn’t quite ready to concede it just yet.

“It’s early,” Anthony said after practice Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Raptors at Madison Square Garden.

“It’s All-Star break right now. I mean, he’s definitely playing like a Most Valuable Player so we’ll see what happens when it comes to that.”

Emmanuel Owootoah is a Canadian point guard now competing at Cordia (Ky.) High School for coach Rodrick Rhodes, a former NBA player and onetime star at St. Anthony under Hall of Famer Bob Hurley. An uncommitted member of the Class of 2013, he will be contributing periodically to ZAGSBLOG during his senior season. Here’s his first entry:

Wassup world? It’s Emmanuel Owootoah, also known as Rico, and you are tuned into my blog on ZAGSBLOG.com.

I currently go to Cordia High School in Kentucky. For me and my team, this season has been filled with a lot of ups and downs. It was tough at first but as the season progresses it seems to only get better. I sat out and missed about 15 games because I had to go through the eligibility process.

It hurt watching my squad from the sidelines in all those close games knowing I could be a huge difference-maker. I just tried to be as encouraging as possible, trying to do all I can to help get them through those tough times.

Miami

Miami has long been considered a football town.

The Hurricanes’ football program was a national power in the 1980s and the Dolphins have had their moments as well.

But now that the Heat are the reigning NBA champs and the Hurricanes are ranked No. 3 in the latest AP Top 25 poll, there’s a buzz surrounding coach Jim Larranaga’s program.

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and James Jones sat courtside for a recent game, and Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, the father of Miami guard Shane Larkin, is a regular presence.
