    The recruiting process is heating up for Christ the King senior shooting guard Jon Severe.

    Alabama, Rutgers, Duquesne and St. Bonaventure are working the hardest for the 6-foot-1 Severe, who is averaging 22.7 points and was recently nominated for the McDonald’s All-American Game, head coach Joe Arbitello told SNY.tv.

    Alabama head coach Anthony Grant and assistant John Brannen saw Severe go for 14 points and seven assists Sunday in a 71-51 win over Xaverian.

    NEW YORK     — After a record-setting night from deep, Carmelo Anthony beat the Hawks with a driving layup.

    Anthony set a personal best by making 9-of-12 3-pointers, but it was his drive past Josh Smith with 12.5 seconds left that helped the Knicks edge the Hawks, 106-104, at Madison Square Garden.

    “It was just a matter of not letting Josh Smith set his feet, not letting the Hawks set their feet,” Anthony said after scoring a game-high 42 points while tying the Knicks’ franchise record for 3-pointers in a game. He made 10 for the U.S. Olympic team last summer in a win over Nigeria, but his previous high in an NBA game was seven..

    NEW YORK — Knicks coach Mike Woodson said Rasheed Wallace “hopefully” will practice this week.

    “He’s still day-to-day,” Woodson said before the Knicks faced the Hawks at MSG. “Hopefully he’ll get a chance to practice this week and hopefully we’ll get a chance to get him back on the floor, we’ll see.”

    The 6-foot-11 Wallace hasn’t played since Dec. 13 and has been listed as “day-to-day” for a month and a half.

    With their 71-67 win over Seton Hall on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, St. John’s has now won four in a row.

    Led by D’Angelo Harrison’s 24 points and seven rebounds, the Johnnies improved to 13-7 overall and 5-3 in the Big East.

    They are now tied for third in the conference with Pittsburgh and trail only Syracuse (6-1) and Marquette (5-1).

    “We’re a work in progress but I think we’re trending upwards,” Johnnies coach Steve Lavin told reporters.

    With DePaul (10-9, 1-5) up next at home on Wednesday, the Johnnies stand a strong chance of moving to 6-3 in the league.

    “That would be big-time,” freshman forward JaKarr Sampson , who had 19 points and five boards in the win, said after the Rutgers win.

    Julius Randle watched N.C. State put on a show against North Carolina.

    With the 6-foot-9 Randle on an official visit, the No. 18 Wolfpack cruised past the arch-rival Tar Heels, 91-83, in ACC action Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.

    “It’s a significant win for us,” Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried said. “To get where you want to be as a program, you have to take certain steps to get there. This was a big one for us.”

    Five players reached double-figures for N.C. State, including point guard Lorenzo Brown, who played brilliantly in putting up 20 points, 11 assists and five turnovers.

    NEW YORK     — There are times when Hallice Cooke looks passive as a basketball player, and other times when he can be a very dangerous man from long range.

    Fortunately for St. Anthony, Cooke got into a groove at just the right time.

    The 6-foot-3 Oregon State-bound shooting guard earned MVP honors at the SNY Invitational after putting up a game-best 22 points as St. Anthony won its 81st consecutive game, 52-45, over Long Island Lutheran at City College.

    St. Anthony (16-0) has now won the SNY Invitational the last two years it has been held — 2011 and ’13.

    “Coach [Bob Hurley] didn’t really have the leash on me today,” Cooke, who went 7-of-13 overall and 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, said with a broad smile. “He kind of let me play and he told me that he wasn’t going to take me out of the game. So I just had to be smart and play through mistakes.”
