Rutgers has its first pledge in the class of 2013 and it’s South Kent (Conn.) point guard Shane Rector.
“I called Coach [Mike Rice] earlier this morning,” the 6-foot-1, 177-pound Rector told SNY.tv.
“I just liked what Coach Rice and Rutgers has to offer and I felt it woudl be a good fit for me. ”
SNY.tv reported Jan. 15 that Rector was leaning to Rutgers following his Jan. 5 visit for the Pitt game.
The former St. Raymond’s of The Bronx floor general is averaging about 14.5 points and 5.5 assists at South Kent.
He also considered Providence, Xavier and Arizona State.
Rutgers has sophomore point guards Myles Mack and Jerome Seagears, who would be juniors when Rector arrives. One or both of those guys could also play off the ball alongside a true point guard.
“I’m just a person that can make plays,” Rector said. “I’m a playmaker. I get my teammates open shots so that will be a good addition to the team.”
“They’re looking for a true point guard who can create offense off the dribble, and [Rice] likes Shane’s ability to do that,” South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson said.
