South Kent Point Guard Rector Likes Rutgers; Kelvin Amayo Considering LIU, Iona

South Kent (Conn.) point guard Shane Rector has Rutgers at the top of his list and could opt to commit sometime soon.

“After this Hoophall [Classic] thing I’m probably going to make a decision sometime after that,” Rector told SNY.tv Tuesday evening.

South Kent plays Brewster (N.H.) Academy Sunday at the Hoophall in Springfield, Mass.

“After that, I’m not really looking for anything new unless something great pops up,” Rector said. “It’s getting pretty late now.”

The former St. Raymond’s of The Bronx floor general is also considering Providence, Xavier and Arizona State, but says he has no plans to visit any of those schools soon. His teammate, wing Kamall Richards, committed to Xavier in early November on SNY.tv.

“I was going to take a visit to Xavier, but I never did,” Rector said.

Rector visited Rutgers for the Pitt game Jan. 5 and came away feeling wanted.

“I really like Rutgers right now,” he said. “They’re like at the top of my list right now, so if I go there I might just end up going there.”

Rutgers has sophomore point guards Myles Mack and Jerome Seagears, who would be juniors when Rector arrives. One or both of those guys could also play off the ball alongside a true point guard.

“They said they need another play-maker and they said that they really like the way I play,” Rector said. “They need a person that can create off the dribble for myself and get my teammates involved. They said that I would be a good fit for their program and for what they’re trying to do.

“I would be able to come in and contribute right away.”

Rector is averaging about 14.5 points and 5.5 assists for South Kent (7-3).

“Coach [Mike] Rice was here Sunday and came up and got a chance to speak to him again,” South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson told SNY.tv. “And obviously Shane played well again. They’re looking for a true point guard who can create offense off the dribble, and he likes Shane’s ability to do that.

“Shane and his father went to Rutgers when they played Pittsburgh and really enjoyed their visit. I think he has a good comfort level with those guys and I think it’s just a matter of him and his father thinking it over to decide what they want to do.”

AMAYO CONSIDERING LIU, IONA

Former Marshall point guard Kelvin Amayo is considering LIU and Iona, among other options.

The New Jersey native took an unofficial to LIU on Monday and hopes to visit Iona after he gets a release there.

He was released by Marshall to about a dozen schools.
