    Few schools in the country added as much talent at the semester break as Providence.

    Ed Cooley and the Friars picked up point guard Kris Dunn, a McDonald’s All-American, and forward Sidiki Johnson, an Arizona transfer who is a mercurial talent.

    In his debut after missing the first part of the season with a right shoulder injury, Dunn tied a freshman school-record with 13 assists in a 79-45 rout of Colgate at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. He added seven points and six rebounds in 27 minutes for the Friars, who wore green jerseys that read “Sandy Hook” on the back in honor of the 26 shooting victims in Newtown, Conn.

    Knicks

    GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Amar’e Stoudemire practiced for the first time this season Tuesday and he did so with the Knicks’ D-League team, the Erie Bayhawks.

    Stoudemire will practice again Thursday with the Knicks and the team will go forward from there with a decision on his next step. There is no firm date for his return to game action.

    “I felt good,” said Stoudemire, who underwent a knee debridement procedure in October that has kept him out as the Knicks started the season 18-6. “I was finally able to get out there and really play some type of scrimmage to a full practice. It was great.”

    Knicks coach Mike Woodson said Monday that it was possible Stoudemire could debut this Friday or Sunday. But Woodson added Tuesday that everything depends on how he feels after Thursday’s practice.

    Rutgers, Seton Hall

    GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Bobby Gonzalez knows a thing or two about being a controversial Big East coach in New Jersey, and so he has a few thoughts on Mike Rice’s three-game suspension and other conditions at Rutgers.

    Gonzalez, the former Seton Hall coach who said he’s now doing some freelance NBA scouting, said he feels empathy for Rice but believes that the Rutgers coach may grow and learn from the experience, which reportedly stemmed from him throwing basketballs at his players’ heads during practice. Rice must also undergo anger management, will have a minder at practice and reportedly must make the postseason to keep his job going forward.

    He is eligible to return Jan. 2 at Syracuse.

    “I would say, first of all, that I think Mike Rice is doing an outstanding job and I mean that sincerely,” Gonzalez told SNY.tv Tuesday at Knicks practice.

    “I think he’s recruited locally, kids in the state of New Jersey. He’s developed Myles Mack. I think he’s done a terrific job in three years with the players he’s getting, so that’s the first thing that should be recognized.

    GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Carmelo Anthony says he’ll “probably be [a] gametime [decision]” for Wednesday’s intra-city showdown with the Nets at Madison Square Garden.

    “I’m moving better than I felt a couple days ago, yesterday,” Anthony said Tuesday. “I did a lot more than I was able to do the last couple of days, so we’ll see what happens. I still got today to get some rest and treatment and I might come back tonight to get a little light workout and then tomorrow morning. So I’ll probably be gametime at this point.”

    Anthony sprained his left ankle when he was fouled by Dwight Howard in last Thursday’s win over the Lakers, and has sat out two games since. The Knicks (18-6) are 1-1 during that stretch, including losing Monday to Jeremy Lin and the Rockets, 109-96.

    Articles, Hurleys, St. Anthony, Temple

    WEST ORANGE, N.J. — When your name is Bob Hurley and your program is called St. Anthony, it seems that every year brings another milestone.

    This year is no exception.

    Having won their 66th consecutive game Sunday with a 64-28 victory over Neptune at the Tip-Off Hoop Group Showcase, the Friars will now seek to set a modern-day New Jersey record of 67 straight wins when they play Newark Central Thursday night.

    Ironically, St. Anthony is seeking to break its own record of 66 straight wins set under Hurley from 1995-7.

    The Passaic “Wonder Teams” under Ernest “Prof” Blood won 159 consecutive games from 1919-25.

    “I haven’t given this thing one second of thought,” said Hurley, the Naismith Hall of Famer who has won back-to-back New Jersey Tournament of Champions titles and 12 overall. “That is something that’s not coming up.

    NEW YORK — On a night when Linsanity returned to Madison Square Garden to hand the Knicks their first home loss of the season, Chris Copeland was the Knicks’ lone bright spot.

    In his second career start, the 28-year-old rookie scored a career-high 29 points in the Knicks 109-96 loss to the Houston Rockets on a collection of long-range jumpers and scenic drives to the rim.

    “I’ve always been confident in my game and I didn’t doubt this,” Copeland said after starting in place of the injured Carmelo Anthony (sprained ankle).

    “[Copeland] was one of the bright spots tonight,” coach Mike Woodson said.
