Tyler Roberson, one of the top small forwards in the Class of 2013 out of Roselle (N.J.) Catholic, will be contributing periodically to ZAGSBLOG entering his senior season.

In this entry, he reveals his top six schools. He has set dates to visit three of the schools: SMU (9/27), Syracuse (10/5) and Kansas (10/12), but not to the other schools:

Last time I wrote I cut my school list to 10.

Since then I have been really busy with recruitment and home visits and talking to coaches.  All of the schools that I had in my top 10 are great schools and have great coaches.

Today was the last day of my home visits.  I was originally going to cut my list to five schools but decided to keep six.

Kyle Washington is off the board.

The 6-foot-9, 215-pound power forward from Brewster (N.H.) Academy committed to N.C. State Sunday morning during an official visit.

He also considered Ohio State, Washington and Iowa State.

“Yes, I did,” he told SNY.tv by phone. “Just the coaching staff, a litle bit of new and old school. Larry Farmer, Coach Orlando [Early], Coach [Mark] Gottfried, all those guys are great.

The commitments just keeping rolling in for Rhode Island head coach Dan Hurley and his staff.

Hassan Martin , a 6-foot-7, 196-pound power forward from Curtis High School on Staten Island, verbally pledged to the Rams Sunday, one day after Michigan point guard E.C. Matthews pledged to the school.

Martin picked Rhody over Providence, St. Joe’s and Iowa State.

“They made me feel comfortable and I bonded with the team,” Martin told SNY.tv. Sunday after a weekend visit that also included Christ the King shooting guard Jon Severe. “It was fun. I like the campus a lot and they show me a lot of love.”

Rhode Island picked up a tremendous point guard prospect Saturday when E.C. Matthews pledged to the Rams.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Matthews out of Romulus (Mich.) High also had offers from Minnesota, Iowa, Marquettte, Providence, Missouri, UConn, Xavier and Dayton, his coach, Nate Oates, told SNY.tv.

“I was real comfortable with the coaching staff and the Hurley Brothers,” Matthews told SNY.tv. “What stood out the most was that they wanted me as a point guard only. They’re telling me that they see something in me as a point guard only, and academic-wise it stood out for me, too.”

Andrew and Aaron Harrison have a different opinion than their father on where they should go to college, a Division 1 source close to the recruitment told SNY.tv.

“The boys want to go to Kentucky, the dad wants them to go to Maryland,” the source said. “The dad’s from there. He and [Maryland coach] Mark Turgeon have known each other a long time since Mark’s days at Texas A&M. But the boys want to go to Kentucky.”

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin has a unique take on the Big East exits of Syracuse, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Notre Dame.

While virtually everyone else laments their losses, Cronin thinks otherwise.

“People say, ‘Well, the Big East isn’t the same Big East.’ That’s good for Cincinnati,” Cronin told SNY.tv Friday at the Brayden Carr Foundation clinic at Rutgers.

NEW YORK — After nearly a year away from coaching while he battled and overcame prostate cancer, St. John’s coach Steve Lavin is anxious to get back to work.

“I feel good and the doctors are pleased with the progress that I’ve made,” Lavin said Saturday at the Dribble for the Cure charity event at St. John’s. “The bloodwork has come back clean and I’m cancer free.”
