NEW YORK — Andy Murray is sitting pretty to win the first Grand Slam title of his career and possibly become the Player of the Year in men’s tennis.

And he has the incompetency of U.S. Open officials to thank for it. Or at least their supremely questionable decision-making.

If Murray does end up winning the Open on Monday afternoon, he and his Scottish compatriot Sean Connery — the original James Bond — should consider sending a case of Scotch to tournament director David Brewer and his colleagues.

Murray beat Tomas Berdych 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (7) in terribly windy and distracting conditions in the semifinals Saturday, but at least he got his match in before the rains came and play was suspended.

While UCLA awaits the fate of star freshman wing Shabazz Muhammad, they got some good news on Saturday.

Al Freeman, a 6-foot-4 combo guard from Findlay Prep, verbally committed to the Bruins during his official visit.

He Tweeted: “I’m officially a UCLA Bruin, thank you too all the people who supported me and especially my family! All love. Long way to go though.”

Freeman, who transferred to Findlay from Charlotte (N.C.) Olympic for his senior season, was to have taken visits to Ohio State (Sept. 15), Villanova (Sept. 28) and Duke (Oct. 19) and Kansas but those won’t be

Austin Colbert, one of the top power forwards in the Class of 2013 out of Gill St. Bernard’s, will be contributing periodically to ZAGSBLOG entering his senior season. Here’s his first entry:

What’s going on?

As of now my list of schools is Miami, Vandy, Georgia Tech, Seton Hall, Illinois and Memphis.

I’m going to visit Miami Sept. 16, Illinois Sept. 29 and  Vandy Oct. 14.

Coach L [Miami coach Jim Larranaga]  is a really good coach he and I have a real good relationship. We talk about everything from basketball to vacation. I know he wants to win and I respect that.

Scott Machado went undrafted this past June, but he realized a dream come true Thursday when he signed a three-year deal with the Houston Rockets.
“I found out that they wanted me to fly out to Houston on Monday of this week and Thursday they signed me,” Machado, who led Division 1 in assists, told SNY.tv by phone. “It feels great. It’s a dream come true of course.”The deal is for two years with a team option for a third year.
