Ish Wainright is down to four schools.
The 6-foot-6, 235-pound small forward from Montrose Christian told SNY.tv he’s down to St. John’s, Texas, Baylor and Ohio State.
“I cut it down to four,” he said.
The Rivals No. 11 small forward in the Class of 2013, Wainright said he cut Duke, SMU, Florida and UCLA from his list.
No official visits are planned.
“We’re starting to work on that tonight or [Friday] night but I can let you know,” he said.
Wainright initially committed to Missouri but decommitted in June 2011.
St. John’s head coach Steve Lavin has made Wainright a priority, along with forwards Jermaine Lawrence and Jarell Martin, and point guard Rysheed Jordan.
St. John’s assistant Rico Hines played for Stu Vetter at St. John’s Prospect Hall and former Lavin player Earl Watson and Wainright are both from Kansas City. Watson backs Wainright’s AAU team, the KC 76ers,.
Lavin, Villanova’s Jay Wright and Virginia’s Tony Bennett will all speak at the Montrose Christian coaches’ clinic Oct. 6.
“First of all, the education [ at St. John’s] is great,” Wainright said. “And the playing style. Coach Lavin said he’s going to let the wings basically run the team, the one through four is capable of playing a different position.”
He added: “And the exact same thing goes for really all of [the schools]. They basically let their wings play and they play defense a lot. That’s one thing I love to do is play defense.”
He hopes to make a decision in the fall.
“It’s possible the fall,” he said. “I’m not trying to go further down. I’m not trying to take it into the season because I want to play this season and have my mind cleared and just trying to win a national championship with my team.”
