Melvin Johnson to VCU

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Onetime Miami signee Melvin Johnson has found a new home.

The 6-foot-3 guard from The Bronx and St. Benedict’s Prep committed to VCU after visiting the school this week, his mother, Kizzy, confirmed to SNY.tv.

“Melvin Johnson is a big-time prolific scorer with unlimited range,” St. Benedict’s Prep coach Mark Taylor told SNY.tv.

“He will thrive at VCU under [coach] Shaka [Smart’s] fast-paced high-energy system. Melvin isa  game-changer who can score buckets in a hurry at critical moments in a game from anywhere on the court. We know he will have a great career at VCU.”

Johnson was forced to find a new home after he was released from his scholarship at Miami.

Sources close to the situation said there was an issue related to Johnson’s test scores, but Taylor said Johnson was “fully qualified.’

Johnson, who helped St. Ben’s go 35-3 last season, initially chose Miami over Virginia Tech, Georgetown, South Florida, Dayton and the College of Charleston.
