Former Miami Signee Melvin Johnson Back on the Market

PHILADELPHIA — Former St. Benedict’s Prep guard Melvin Johnson is back on the market after he received his release from Miami.

“They released him and he’s free to go anywhere he wants,” St. Ben’s coach Mark Taylor told SNY.tv.

Sources close to the situation said there was an issue related to Johnson’s test scores, but Taylor said the 6-foot-2 Bronx native was “fully qualified.’

Taylor said Johnson “hasn’t decided” where he will go but has “plenty of looks.”

Johnson, who helped St. Ben’s go 35-3 last season, initially chose Miami over Virginia Tech, Georgetown, South Florida, Dayton and the College of Charleston.

“We want it [done] as soon as possible,” Johnson’s mother, Kizzy Gladden, told the New York Post. “Classes start in a month. I’m hoping the next week, week and a half. We don’t want to make a circus out of it.”

“I didn’t want to go through the process again,” she added. “It’s rough. It’s hard for me and him. But I see everything happens for a reason.”
