D’Angelo Russell Meets With Calipari

After getting in sometime around 5 a.m. from Puerto Rico, Kentucky coach John Calipari met with 2014 Montverde (Fla.) Academy guard D’Angelo Russell during an unofficial visit Monday.

The visit was first reported by SNY.tv.

“It was great,” Russell told SNY.tv by text. “I loved the campus and the program but coach Kenny Payne stood out to me the most.”

“The visit was wonderful,” added Antonio Russell, D’Angelo’s father. “It was amazing.

“Just basically we really got to know each other. He’s telling my son that he had seen him play and liked how he played. He was letting us know that his program is not for everybody.

“If you wanna win, it’s a good program. At the same time, there’s a lot expected. There’s a lot that comes with it. You gotta know how to balance yourself out.

“You can become a star overnight there but you can’t let it get to your head.”

Antonio said Calipari, who led the Dominican Republic to an 80-72 victory over Puerto Rico Sunday in the Centrobasket championship game, did not offer his son a scholarship.

Russell visited Cincinnati last week and the family is trying to set up a visit to Tennessee in the coming days.

“We’re trying to go visit Tennessee before this July break,” he said. “We’re trying to see Tennessee next.”
