    NEW ORLEANS — Basketball seems to come easy for Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, the hard-charging Kentucky freshman from Somerdale, N.J., who is projected as a Top 3 pick in this year’s NBA Draft.

    But speaking to reporters and in front of cameras — a requirement for high-profile athletes — hasn’t always been so easy.

    Gilchrist, 18, has battled a stutter for much of his life.

    On Sunday, during a 14-minute session with a small group of reporters here inside the Kentucky locker room on the eve of the NCAA championship game Monday night against Kansas, Kidd-Gilchrist addressed the issue for the first time in the four years I have covered him.

    NEW ORLEANS — St. Patrick basketball coach Chris Chavannes believes his school will be open next season and that the basketball team will feature Seton Hall commit Aquille Carr.

    “We sent a letter to parents, the student body and to alumni that we are going to be independent of the Archdiocese [of Newark] and we are in the process of putting that together,” Chavannes told SNY.tv Sunday in confirming a report by The Star-Ledger. “We’re very confident that we’ll be able to get that done in the near future.”

    NEW YORK — An already up-and-down season for the New York Knicks took an ominous turn on Saturday evening before they beat the Cleveland Cavaliers, 91-75, at Madison Square Garden.

    With second-year point guard Jeremy Lin having missed the previous three games entering Saturday with what the team had been terming a sore left knee, the Knicks announced Lin will have arthroscopic surgery early next week to repair a slightly torn meniscus in his left knee.

    The Knicks are already without Amar’e Stoudemire for 2-4 weeks as he deals with a bulging disk in his back.

    NEW ORLEANS –– There’s Manny being Manny.

    And now there’s Tyshawn being Tyshawn.

    In the span of a few heart-stopping moments late Saturday night, Taylor gaveth and he tooketh away.

    The Hoboken, N.J., native and former St. Anthony star hit two clutch foul shots with 8.3 seconds remaining to give Kansas a three-point lead after they had trailed by as many as 13 in the national semifinals against Ohio State.

    And then, in the blink of an eye, he stole an inbounds pass from Lenzelle Smith and fired a crosscourt bounce pass to Elijah Johnson then ended up going to Kansas coach Bill Self instead.
