Johnnies Add Another Recruit in Wood

For the fourth time in eight days, St. John’s has added a commit for the spring signing period.

Darrick Wood, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Bridgton (Me.) Academy, re-committed to the Johnnies on his weekend visit.

“Yes,” Wood, who runs with the Playaz Basketball Club, confirmed via text after announcing on his Twitter.

Sources told SNY.tv that Wood “still has some work to do academically but he has made real progress on that front.”

Wood, who committed last August only to decommit in January, follows the Monroe duo of forward Orlando Sanchez and guard Marco Bourgault and former Harvard guard Max Hooper in players who have committed in the last eight days.

They join 6-3 Felix Balamou and 6-8 JaKarr Sampson to give head coach Steve Lavin a six-man recruiting class.

Lavin Tweeted: “Productive Wknd For The Johnnies On The Recruiting Front! Good Momentum ForĀ #STJbb! Hammer To Rock! Gradually Climbing The Ladder!”

All told, St. John’s would now have 12 players on their team next year, including five returning players and transfer Jamal Branch.

That would leave them with only one scholarship to give among the group of Chris Obekpa, Philip Nolan and Michael Chandler.

As reported earlier on SNY.tv, the 6-9 Obekpa still plans to visit Oregon and is also considering UConn, Providence, St. John’s, DePaul and Cincinnati.

Still, because of all the moving parts involved, there is likely to be further movement in this class.
