Harvard Transfer Hooper Considering St. John’s, Oakland

Max Hooper, a 6-foot-6 guard from Carmel Valley, Calif., is considering St. John’s and Oakland (MI) as his new landing spots after transferring from Harvard.

“I’m familiar with those schools and I’m just feeling around after that,” Hooper told SNY.tv Friday by phone.

Hooper, who played with incoming St. John’s frosh JaKarr Sampson at Brewster (N.H.) Academy and played in only two games for the Crimson, plans to visit both schools with his father, Chip, but has yet to set any visit dates.

St. John’s coach Steve Lavin is in the market for a shooter to help space the offense and is also involved with Monroe (N.Y.) College wing Marco Bourgault.

“Coach Lavin, he just kind of explains to me that they have a need for shooting,” Hooper said. “There’s an obvious need for shooting on the roster, as well as just a strong interest in bringing in a player like me, a shooter with size.

“The need for shooting as well as the need for a smart player cerebrally.”

Hooper said Oakland was involved in his recruitment since before he attended Brewster.

“Oakland is a school that has recruited me for quite a while prior o my commitment to Harvard, when I first started at Brewster,” he said.

“They have been successful at the mid-major level and they’re graduating they’re top couple scorers. They are in need of a shooter and a scorer.”

Hooper said he has no timetable on a decision and will have at least three years of eligibility when he transfers.
