The New York metropolitan area will be represented in the NCAA Tournament by a couple of overachievers from mid-major conferences.

The Big Apple and its surrounding area won’t be repped by Big East schools like St. John’s, Seton Hall or Rutgers, but by Iona and LIU-Brooklyn instead. (We’re not counting Syracuse, which is located in upstate New York.)

“I think [we’re] a team that epitomizes New York,” LIU coach Jim Ferry told the New York Post. “For one, it’s a bit of a melting pot. I think we have kids from all over the country, that’s really blended well together. It’s a group of kids that really sacrifice for one another.

“They’re tough-minded, they’re hard-nosed, they respect everybody, but at the same time they don’t fear anybody. And I think that symbolizes what New York’s about.”

Following his official visit to Georgetown, Nerlens Noel will head to visit North Carolina next week.

“He liked [Georgetown],” a source close to Noel’s recruitment told SNY.tv. “Planning on visiting Carolina next week.”

The source confirmed the Carolina visit, which was first reported by SNY.tv last week.

“North Carolina got a tradition that speaks for itself,” Noel said in a recent interview with FiveStarBasketball.com. “Very well coached by Roy Williams and that’s a great program and especially talking to him he told me some things about playing time right away and that’s a positive.

When Ames (Iowa) High School coach Vance Downs first saw the NCAA tournament bracket, his initial reaction was, “I thought Creighton would be a little higher than that.”

Creighton (28-5) was given the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region and could face No. 1 North Carolina (29-5) in the third round if the Bluejays can get past a tough No. 9 Alabama (21-11) in the second round Friday.

If they do, that would set up a reunion between arguably the two best players ever to come out of Downs’s program: North Carolina sophomore Harrison Barnes and Creighton sophomore Doug McDermott, who on Monday was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-American First Team.

“If the game happens, then I’ll probably go,” Downs told SNY.tv, referring to the Greensboro, N.C. site. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

St. John’s has landed a verbal commitment from Felix Balamou, a 6-foot-3 wing from Our Savior New American.

Balamou announced on his Facebook page and is the Johnnies first commitment for the Class of 2012. West Virginia, Oregon, Virginia Tech and UConn were also involved with Balamou, a native of Guinea.

Balamou considered attending prep school next season but will instead head to St. John’s, said Our Savior assistant Eric Jaklitsch, who added that Balamou is qualified to play college ball.

Balamou averaged about 16 points for an Our Savior team that finished 25-5.
