Hurley Rounds Out Rhode Island Staff With Carr; Ian Baker to Providence

NEW ORLEANS — New Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley has rounded out his staff with the addition of Jimmy Carr from Rutgers.

Hurley’s staff now includes his brother, Bobby, Carr and Preston Murphy, who worked for former coach Jim Baron and will stay on with Hurley.

“Jimmy Carr has been a tremendous asset to me and my staff, not only for his knowledge of Rutgers University, but the Big East as well,” Rutgers coach Mike Rice said. “Jimmy is a great coach and an even better person. We are excited for him to have this opportunity. We wish Jimmy and Natalie nothing but the best.”

The Carr news was first reported by Jerry Carino, who pointed out that Carr helped recruit Hamady N’Diaye, Greg Echenique, Dane Miller and Gilvydas Biruta to Rutgers.

Biruta will transfer and Rhode Island is one possible destination, though nothing is set.

BAKER TO PROVIDENCE

Ian Baker, a 6-1 combo guard from Arlington (Fla.) Country Day, has committed to Providence.

Country Day coach Rex Morgan told SNY.tv Baker committed several weeks ago, though the new was reported Friday by Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal.

“I know that he’s strong enough to play in the Big East,” Morgan said. “He’s a combo guard. He rebounds well from the guard position, a lot like Gary Browne from West Virginia. Gary’s more of a one and Ian’s  more of a combo.”

Morgan said Baker also had offers from Ole Miss and Xavier.

He and fellow guard Carlos Morris were committed to South Carolina.

Morris is now being courted by  St. John’s, Xavier, Tulane and South Carolina, Morgan said. The two plan to touch base next week to formulate a plan.
