Steve Lavin says he will return as the head coach of St. John’s, although it is possible he may not coach again until the 2012-13 season.

“It’s clear I’m going to come back as the head coach, but from the beginning the doctors have been very clear,” Lavin, 47, told SNY Wednesday.

“After my premature return and setting myself back on the health front that the most important thing long term for my health is for me to recuperate and to recover. And until that happens, it doesn’t make any sense to speculate or start to play the game with the calendar…

“I’ll be back at some point but not until I’m healthy.”

Iman Shumpert could enter the Knicks starting lineup Friday at the Washington Wizards.

Head coach Mike D’Antoni conceded after practice Thursday that the rookie out of Georgia Tech could replace point guard Toney Douglas or shooting guard Landry Fields in the starting lineup.

“Everything is on the table,” D’Antoni said. “We’ll try to figure out the best starting lineup, what’s the best way to rotate people and what’s the best way to win.

“There are a lot of things you have to think about it; people’s psyche, are they better coming off the bench.”

Former Kentucky guard Stacey Poole says he will transfer to one of four schools and hopes to be eligible for the fall of 2012.

“Right now, I have Seton Hall, Georgia Tech, FIU and DePaul,” Poole, who decided in November to leave Kentucky at the start of his sophomore season, told SNY.tv Thursday night by phone.

A Jacksonville, Fla., native, the 6-foot-5 Poole will visit Florida International this weekend.

“I have a visit set up tomorrow [Friday] to FIU because it’s close to home and I can get there,” he said.

A year ago at this time, Louisville coach Rick Pitino said he told Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard it would take “four or five years” to turn things around from the situation he inherited from former coach Bobby Gonzalez.

Relating a conversation he had with Willard in December 2010, Pitino told SNY.tv: “You better put your blueprint together and say what you’re building is not going to come to fruition until four or five years from now and you’ve got to be ready to take it.”

Fast forward a year and Willard is way ahead of Pitino’s timetable.

NEW YORK –
– The day is coming, and it may not be too far off, when Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni will have to make a choice regarding rookie guard Iman Shumpert.

D’Antoni can either insert the energetic Shumpert into the starting lineup for the struggling Landry Fields.

Or the coach can continue to bring Shumpert off the bench because, well, the Knicks hardly have any bench at all.

“Yeah, Iman’s bringing a lot of energy,” Amar’e Stoudemire said following the team’s disheartening 118-110 loss Wednesday to the Charlotte Bobcats at MSG.

NEW YORK — UConn won 11 straight postseason games last year with the fiery and energetic Kemba Walker leading the way.

The Huskies took five games in five days to capture the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden, and then added six more victories for their third NCAA championship.

Yet Walker, now a rookie with the Charlotte Bobcats, says the No. 8 Huskies are more talented now that he’s gone.
