JUCO Point Guard Chris Jones Drawing Big East Interest

Junior college point guard Chris Jones of Northwest Florida State College is drawing interest from a number of Big East programs.

“It’s early,” head coach Steve Forbes told SNY.tv. “UConn has made some inroads there.

“He’s heard from Louisville, West Virginia, [Seton Hall associate head coach] Shaheen [Holloway] called me.

“He’s the type of player that will be able to go wherever he wants.”

Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com first reported the interest by Big East schools in the 5-foot-10 Jones, who will be in the Class of 2013. Jones is averaging 17 points a game for undefeated Northwest Florida (17-0), the new No. 1 junior college program in the nation.

“He’s a great player,” said Forbes, a former Tennessee assistant under Bruce Pearl. “We signed him at Tennessee last year in the fall. He’s from Memphis Melrose. He was the MVP of the state tournament in his junior year. He’s just a really, really good player.

“He can score, he can defend, he can get people involved in the offense. He’s not Kemba Walker, but that’s who he likes to play like.”
