St. John’s got a big win and a big addition Wednesday night.
D’Angelo Harrison hit a clutch 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to help the Johnnies win, 66-61, avoiding an upset at the hands of Texas Pan-American.
Yet the bigger storyline was the arrival of freshman wing Amir Garrett, who was declared eligible Tuesday and then scored three points with two rebounds in 15 minutes. He played without having a full practice under his belt.
NEW YORK — Josh Harrellson and Iman Shumpert shot a combined 4 for 22 in the Knicks 88-82 preseason win over the Nets Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
But both impressed head coach Mike D’Antoni to the point where they could be in the rotation when the regular season begins Christmas Day against the Boston Celtics.
“The two rookies, you just keep thinking that they’re going to be part of everything, that they’ve earned some time,” D’Antoni said, adding that he expects to play “10 or 11 guys” because of the condensed NBA schedule. “So that’s a question mark that seems to be OK right now.”

And Carmelo Anthony feels they did the right thing.
The Madison Square Garden faithful sarcastically chanted “We Want Humphries” at various times during the Knicks’ 88-82 exhibition win Wednesday at MSG .
They also booed the ex-Mr. Kardashian when he entered the game.
“I like it, to be honest with you,” Anthony said. “That’s how it should be. Our fans shouldn’t be cheering for nobody else, and that’s the way it should be.”

NEW YORK — Now that Baron Davis — otherwise known as Spike Lee’s cousin — is a member of the Knicks, he intends to support the Big Apple’s main college team, too.
Davis played for St. John’s coach Steve Lavin at UCLA and even though he once directed a famous shot in Lav’s direction, Davis now pledges his complete support to his former coach’s current team.
“I was up there about two weeks ago talking to the team and just hanging out so I’ll be up at St. John’s all the time,” Davis, who is sidelined with herniated discs in his back, told SNY.tv exclusively Wednesday before the exhibition game against the Nets. “You can bet on that.”
NEW YORK — The Knicks officially claimed 6-foot-10 Steve Novak off waivers Wednesday night.
“He’s a shooter,” head coach Mike D’Antoni said before the preseason game against the Nets at MSG. “Spreads the floor. Can’t have too many shooters.”
Released by the San Antonio Spurs Monday, Novak has made 41.7 percent of his 3-point shots, and 513 of his 720 attempts are from beyond the arc.
He went 23-of-42 from deep last year in San Antonio.
In this interview with Harrison Sanford of FiveStarBasketball.com, Shabazz Muhammad says he’s considering six schools.
The No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2012 is looking at Kentucky, Duke, UCLA, Arizona, Kansas and UNLV.
USC, the alma mater of Muhammad’s father, Ron Holmes, is apparently out, as is Texas A&M, as Five Star reported.
“I narrowed my list down actually to six,” he said at the City of Palms Classic. “I think it was a good thing for me to narrow them down to six because a lot of schools were calling that I wasn’t really interested in. So now I can stay grounded on the court and get ready and go through the season.”
