Seton Hall freshman center Kevin Johnson was declared academically ineligible by the NCAA on Oct. 5, an NCAA spokesman told SNY.tv Friday.

“Seton Hall was notified on October 5 that Mr. Johnson was declared an academic non-qualifier for competition this year, but can receive financial aid and will still have four years of eligibility left after this season,” Chris Radford of the NCAA said by email.

Sources said Seton Hall had applied for a waiver on Johnson’s behalf, but Radford said “No appeal has been submitted to date.” Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard had no comment at the current time.

West Virginia has three pledged basketball commits for 2012, and at least one of them says it doesn’t matter to him which league he ends up competing in.

“I really don’t pay attention to the conference changes,” Elijah Macon, a 6-foot-9 power forward from Huntington (West Va.) Prep, told SNY.tv by text. “I really look at what I’m going to do when I get to the program.”

Macon is headed to West Virginia for 2012 along with Eron Harris, a 6-3 shooting guard from Lawrence (Ind.) North, and Terry Henderson, a 6-5 shooting guard from Raleigh (N.C.) Neuse Baptist Christian School.

West Virginia — and not Louisville — has been accepted into the new 10-team Big 12 Conference.

But the question is, When will the Mountaineers begin play in their new league?

In announcing the unanimous decision by its Board of Directors to approve West Virginia, the Big 12 announced that, “The Mountaineers will begin competing in the Big 12 beginning with the 2012-13 athletic season.”

But Big East Commissioner John Marinatto says he plans to makes all outgoing teams — Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC, and now West Virginia to the Big 12 — wait the mandated 27 months that accompanies the $5 million exit fee for current teams.

Kyrie Irving returned to his alma mater Tuesday night and he brought more than his jaw-dropping basketball skills.

He brought some valuable lessons for the young St. Patrick players as well as a promise to donate some of his earnings to the struggling Catholic school.

“He’s very, very helpful in so many ways,” St. Patrick coach Chris Chavannes told SNY.tv. “And he’s made his promise to also help out the school financially in the very, very near future.”

David Laury, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward from West Orange, N.J., has verbally committed to Iona and will be eligible to suit up in January 2013, a team source confirmed to SNY.tv.

Laury chose the Gaels over offers from Baylor, UMass and Southern Miss. He will have two and a half years of eligibility after sitting a full year at Iona.

“He is really, really good,” one Division 1 coach said. “He could be a pro.”
