Mount Vernon High School has become a virtual pipeline to the Big East in recent years.

West Virginia senior forward Kevin Jones and freshman point guard Jabarie Hinds both played for head coach Bob Cimmino at ‘Money Earnin’ Mount Vernon.’

Cimmino also coached former Rutgers players Jonathan Mitchell and Mike Coburn.

And current senior point guard Isaiah Cousins — who holds offers from Hofstra, Manhattan and Stonybrook but won’t sign until the spring — may still wind up in the Big East if he blows up this season.

“I think he wants to see if his recruitment does blow up,” Cimmino said. “He’s gotten so much better in the last six months that it’s very, very noticeable.”

Yet with the future of the Big East now up in the air, Cimmino feels more than a tinge of sadness.

David Laury
will never play on the same Iona team as Mike Glover, but he’s looking forward to practicing against him.

“To get a chance to play against a Mike Glover for a year will just elevate my game, especially defensively where I need the most work,” Laury said by text.

As reported last week, the 6-foot-8, 245-pound Laury committed to Iona but won’t be eligible until Jan. 2013. He chose the Gaels over Baylor, UMass, Southern Miss and Utah State.

For the upcoming season he will practice with a team that includes Glover, Lamont “Momo” Jones and Scott Machado and was picked to win the MAAC.

“I chose Iona because for the first time I found genuine coaches in my opinion who are going to help me reach my potential and get the most out of me,” said Laury, who was recruited by Iona associate head coach Jared Grasso. “Every coach on the staff is a good genuine guy. I just couldn’t be happier.”

UConn freshman star Andre Drummond suffered a broken nose and mild concussion during practice Friday, according to sports information director Kyle Muncy.

Drummond, the Big East Preseason Rookie of the Year, will be fitted for a mask Monday and will wear it 6-8 weeks.

He was checked into the UConn infirmary Friday and released Saturday, according to Muncy.

“This sucks. Mild concussion and I broke my nose. #worstdayever.” the 6-foot-11 Drummond tweeted.

The Hartford Courant reported that Drummond was accidentally hit by freshman Brendan Allen, who just made the team as a walk-on.

Missouri landed a pair of 2012 recruits on Friday.

Stefan Jankovic, a 6-foot-11 power forward from Huntington (West Va.) Prep, verbally pledged to the Tigers, as did Domonique Bull, a a 6-4 shooting guard from the Tilton School (N.H.).

“Been a long process, but its finally over. I will be taking my talents to ……….Missouri !” tweeted Jankovic, who also considered Florida State.

“He’s grown, he’s 6-11 now,” Huntington coach Rob Fulford said. “He’s extremely skilled. I wouldn’t say he’s a prototypical European kid since he’s from Canada, but he can shoot. He’s a matchup nightmare.
