Indiana self reported a secondary NCAA rules violation related to elite shooting guard Gary Harris, ESPN.com reported.
The school issued a statement conceding that head coach Tom Crean committed a violation by visiting an unnamed student-athlete in Indianapolis Oct. 6. The contact period ended Oct. 5, meaning coaches could not meet with players after that date.
“Coach Crean immediately reported an inadvertent recruiting contact violation to our compliance office, and we are following our normal procedures,” the school said in a statement.
Indiana assistant Tim Buckley noted the error and reported it to the Indiana compliance office, which, in turn, told the NCAA, ESPN.com reported. The school docked itself two recruiting days as a result.
The 6-4 Harris is considering Indiana, Kentucky, Purdue and Michigan State. He is slated to visit Indiana this weekend, Kentucky Oct. 22 and Michigan State Nov. 5.
A Kentucky fan sent emails to media members about the violation and a blogger from KentuckySportsNetwork.com also reported it.
Indiana is on probation until Nov. 24 for major recruiting violations that occured under former coach Kelvin Sampson.
