St. John’s coach Steve Lavin said Saturday he plans to undergo a more aggressive form of treatment for prostate cancer, which he was diagnosed with last fall.
“After the most recent consultation, my doctors feel at this point that the active surveillance approach is off the table,” Lavin, 47, told reporters Saturday. “So that narrows the treatment options to surgery or radiation.
“The advantage of early detection is that we have these options that can assist in leading to a cancer-free life.”
Lavin said his doctors will decide what course of action to take next, and that he doesn’t believe the more aggressive course of action will interfere with his ability to coach.
The Red Storm begin practice Oct. 14 and open the season Nov. 7.

I’m curious what kind of “aggressive” treatment he’s taking advantage of, specifically. Prostate cancer surgery is difficult, from what I hear, and I know there are decent radiation options (such as proton therapy), so I wonder if that’s what he’s going for?
