Seton Hall Fans Turn out at Anderson’s Fall Game

Jimmy Ring
has coached basketball at Paterson (N.J.) Kennedy for 15 years and has seen a lot of things.

But even Ring was impressed with what he saw Wednesday night at Kennedy.

Approximately 40-60 Seton Hall fans turned up to watch Kyle Anderson play a Fall Ball League game for St. Anthony against Gill St. Bernard’s.

Anderson is considering Seton Hall, St. John’s, Florida, Georgetown and UCLA and is due to announce Sept. 20.

After spending the day on an unofficial visit at St. John’s during which he spoke with Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Baron Davis, Anderson entered the gym at about 10 minutes to 7.

“I’m talking with Coach [Bob] Hurley and I hear this cheer and I look up and Kyle is jogging across the court to the locker toom to change,” Ring said. “I looked and I said, ‘Those are all Seton Hall University pep shirts.’

“I turned to Coach Hurley and I said, ‘You know you’ve made it big time when one of the schools that’s recruiting you has fans come out and watch you play in a Fall League game.’

“We’re not even talking about playing a regular season high school game or if the kid shows up at a Seton Hall game and they start chanting ‘Kyle, Kyle, Kyle.'”

Once the game began, the fans lined the sideline (two games were played in the gym) and cheered Anderson’s every move.

“Believe me, every possession he touched it they started cheering,” Ring said. “He scored, they went crazy. He rebounded, they started cheering, He blocked a shot, they went crazy.

“‘Dancing Joe’ was all they were missing tonight.”

Still, Ring has known Anderson since he was 5 years old and said his demeanor hasn’t changed.

“He’s one of the biggest recruits in the country and he’s still as levelheaded,” Ring said.

The whole affair wasn’t lost on Anderson.

He tweeted, “Shu showed me lots of love today!!
