Goodwin Trims List to 5, Likely to Sign Late

Archie Goodwin has trimmed his list to five schools and is likely to wait until the spring period to sign.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Sherwood (Ark.) Sylvan Hills is now considering Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis and UConn. He will take officials to all five schools.

“I’m going to wait till the spring,” he said.

“They all have great educational systems as well,” he added. “And that just makes them more appealing.”

He broke down each school during a phone interview Wednesday with SNY.tv.

Arkansas (Oct. 8, official visit) “Arkansas is my home state. Great fan support there. They’re showing a lot of love to me. It’s a possibility that they get me. They have a great coach [Mike Anderson] in now with a great coaching staff behind him, some hard-working guys. And they have a system that this year’s team I think is flourishing in.”

Goodwin understands that if he doesn’t pick Arkansas he will get some heat at home, but he seems prepared for that.

“I feel like it’s going to be a lot of stuff on Twitter said about me that’s not going to be too pretty,” he said. “There’s just going to be a lot of disappointment in the faces because I didn’t go here. But Arkansas is a lovely place. I feel I would never change where I from or anything like that. But if I don’t commit, obviously I saw an opportunity for me somewhere else so I would just hope that they would understand that and care about my personal interests, rather than what I can do for a program.”

Kentucky (Oct. 14): “As far as Kentucky, another great program, a winning program. Has a great coach [John Calipari], and another great staff behind him. Consistently puts guards in the league and other players as well. In the NCAA Tournament, in the last Elite 8 or so.”

Kansas (Sept. 24): “Another great coach, another great facility. Great fan base. Huge support system and a lot of history behind them, too.”

Memphis (Oct. 21): “Memphis is not far away from me. I’m great friends with Coach [Josh] Pastner. A very young coach. He has a lot of good players and they’re going to do some great things this year and they’re continuing to get better. The only downside with them is the conference. Besides the conference, nothing else is wrong with them. They’re just playing not as challenging a conference.”

UConn (Sept. 30): “Just fresh off a national championship victory. Great coach, great assistant coaches. They put guards in the league as well. They have great fan support. They play in a great atmosphere. Get to play in Madison Square Garden.”
