When the U.S. Open men’s seeds were revealed Wednesday, only three American men made the cut.
That development came one day after No. 28 Serena Williams was the only American woman among the 32 seeds.
Mardy Fish is the highest-seeded American man at No. 8. 2003 champ Andy Roddick is No. 21 and 6-foot-10 John Isner stands tall at No. 28.
Let’s face it, Providence is not the easiest job in the Big East.
In fact, it’s one of the hardest.
It’s a small Catholic school with no football program to draw recruits on Saturdays and a limited recruiting base.
Last year, the Friars finished 15-17 overall, 4-14 in the Big East.
The year before, they ended 12-19, 4-14 in the league.
West Virginia coach Bob Huggins and the Mountaineer faithful got some good news Wednesday when incoming point guard Jabarie Hinds of Mount Vernon High was declared academically eligible by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Hinds was unable to make the team’s trip to Europe while he was making up coursework.
“We thought we knew that it was kind of a foregone conclusion (that he would qualify), it was just a matter of time,” Huggins told MetroNews Statewide Sportsline. “This time of the year you’ve got football in full swing and (the NCAA) is trying to get football guys on the field, they’re trying to get soccer players on the field and cross country. So, it’s a busy, busy time for them.”
Serena Williams was reportedly tearing up the dance floor over the weekend at the Kim Kardashian-Kris Humphries wedding.
And she could be tearing up the women’s draw at the U.S. Open next week, too.
Serena, a three-time Open champ and 13-time Major winner, was seeded No. 28 on Tuesday.
When the draw comes out on Thursday, one unlucky woman among the top eight seeds could be looking at a third-round match against Serena.
The Team Scan trio of Chris McCullough, Shavar Newkirk and Conrad Chambers have been making the rounds this summer.
And piling up the offers in the process.
On Tuesday, the 2014 trio hit Seton Hall and all three received offers, according to Team Scan coach Terrance “Munch” Williams.
“They offered all three of them,” he said.
Kris Dunn will take an unofficial visit to Providence Wednesday and is expected to announce at 1 p.m. for the Friars, a source with knowledge told SNY.tv.
“A commitment from a top point guard in the class will speak volumes about [the Providence] program,” the source said.
The 6-foot-3 Dunn is the No. 4 point guard in the Class of 2012, per Rivals.
Dunn had reportedly narrowed his list to Providence and UConn, but a source close to the Huskies staff said head coach Jim Calhoun had not been in recent contact with Dunn and that UConn was instead focusing on bigs like Andre Drummond, Jarnell Stokes, Anthony Bennett and Chris Obekpa.
Ricky Ledo is down to five schools.
The 6-foot-7 small forward from Notre Dame Prep told SNY.tv he will consider Providence, UConn, Syracuse, Kentucky and West Virginia.
No official visits are set, but Ledo did just trip to Syracuse last weekend for their Elite Camp.
Ledo said he is particularly close with incoming Syracuse shooting guard Michael Carter-Williams.
