Kareem Canty Opens it Up (UPDATED)

After initially saying he planned to announce his college choice this week, Kareem Canty has opened up his recruitment and will take some time.

“He was feeling pressured to choose a school,” Long Island Lightning coach Dana Dingle said Tuesday by phone, echoing comments he gave to the New York Post.

“He’s a kid who shouldn’t feel that way. We talked and he’s got a better feel for what he needs to do.”

Canty had narrowed his list to Seton Hall, Xavier, Miami and Florida State but has also heard from UCLA, Washington, Virginia and Baylor, according to Dingle.

“It’s way too early for a kid of his caliber to commit when there’s a ton of schools that still want to evaluate him, especially with the 2012 class, the point guard position in that class is really weak,” Dingle said.

Dingle said he expects Canty’s recruitment to pick up in the coming weeks and months.

“Probably a bunch of other schools backed off because he narrowed his list down to four schools,” Dingle said. “He didn’t realize the impact it would have on the other schools.

“I’m sure [his recruitment] will pick up especially after the first camp.”
