New York Panthers coach Gary Charles confirmed by phone Wednesday that Seton Hall Prep point guard Sterling Gibbs has asked for his release from Maryland and new coach Mark Turgeon.

“He wants the release,” Charles said. “The family has asked for the release and they’re waiting to see if they can get the release.”

Gibbs was not immediately available for comment but reportedly told NYCHoops of Turgeon, “He doesn’t really know me and my game.”

The NCAA late signing period ends May 19 and a dead period runs from May 19-28, meaning no off-campus recruiting is permitted. So Charles would like the matter resolved quickly. Regardless, Gibbs cannot sign a second National Letter of Intent.

Former Michigan star Robert “Tractor” Traylor was found dead of an apparent heart attack at age 34 in his apartment in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico, according to a Facebook posting by his team in Puerto Rico.

Police in San Juan said in a statement the 6-foot-8, 300-pound Traylor was found on the bedroom floor of his oceanfront apartment.

Traylor was taken by the Dallas Mavericks with the No. 6 pick in the 1998 NBA Draft and dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks for Pat Garrity and German prospect Dirk Nowitzki.

St. John’s coach Steve Lavin has wrapped up his 2011 recruiting class and is already working on 2012.

Ricardo Gathers confirmed by text he will visit the Queens campus Thursday.

“They basically told me I’ll come in and bring a lot of energy to them and create a lot of matchup problems,” he said last month. “Just coming into New York, the atmosphere of the city and the background and history of the city, as far as basketball goes it’s one of the biggest basketball meccas in the nation.”

Trevor Lacey will announce his college choice May 18, his father told Rivals.com.

The 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Huntsville (Ala.) Butler High finished up his official visit to Kansas Monday.

He is down to Kansas, Kentucky, Alabama and Auburn and will reportedly announce at 2 p.m. on May 18 at his high school. Lacey had also considered a visit to UConn and or N.C. State, per KUSports.com.

The No. 24 ranked player in the Class of 2011 and the No. 6 shooting guard, Lacey averaged 31.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 2.6 assists a game this past season.
