Boylan to Replace Gonzo on MAAC Sideline

Gonzo is out and Boylan is in.

Joe Boylan, the former Loyola (Md.) athletic director and onetime Rutgers associate head coach, will work the MAAC sidelines instead of former Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez.

“We talked to him [Gonzo] but it didn’t work out,” said Ken Taylor, associate commissioner for the MAAC. “He had a conflict.”

Gonzo was initially in the mix for the volunteer position because Vin Parise also had a conflict. The talented Parise, author of VPHoops.com, will be working for the Big East Network at the Big East tournament.

“Vin was our original person and he had a conflict,” Taylor said.

Gonzalez has been out of work since being fired last spring by Seton Hall.

His former team beat No. 15 St. John’s, 84-70, Thursday night and is headed for a showdown with in-state rival Rutgers in the first round of the Big East tournament Tuesday.

Boylan was on the Rutgers staff in 1976 when the Scarlet Knights went to the Final Four behind Phil “The Thrill” Sellers.
