Pressure on Pitt, Big East as Madness Draws Nearer

NEW YORK — When the NCAA tournament tips off next month, there will be plenty of Big East representation.

As many as 10 or 11 of the conference’s 16 teams could get invited.

There will also be plenty of pressure on the league’s elite teams, especially No. 4 Pittsburgh.

“We could go out in the second round, or we could win the whole thing,” a source close to the Pitt staff said Saturday after the team lost to St. John’s, 60-59, at Madison Square Garden on Dwight Hardy’s last-second, underhand, flip-in layup.
