UNION, N.J. — From Tristan Thompson to Myck Kabongo to Khem Birch, Canada has produced its share of talented Division 1 basketball signees in recent years.
The next big Canadian star could be 6-foot-8, 230-pound Anthony Bennett, a 2012 forward from Brampton, Ontario who plays for national power Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep.
“Bennett is a talent,” one Division 1 head coach said. “He has broad shoulders. He could become a beast.”
Bennett has offers from UNLV, UConn, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Arizona and others, but says he has “No favorites yet.”
“I’ll probably try to pick a Top 10 in the next two months or so,” Bennett said before scoring 12 points and grabbing 6 rebounds Sunday when Findlay downed Newark East Side, 76-50, at the PrimeTime Shootout at Kean University. “Right now I’m just breaking it down.”
Bennett’s teammates include the Texas-bound Kabongo, Arizona signee Nick Johnson and St. John’s commit Amir Garrett.
All of them are in his ear.
“[Garrett] has been talking to me about St. John’s and Nick’s been talking to me about Arizona, so I don’t know, man,” said Bennett, who runs with Team Takeover -Canada in the summer.
On Sunday, Kentucky coach John Calipari, Pitt coach Jamie Dixon, Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard and Rutgers coach Mike Rice were among those in the gym.
“It’s nice,” Bennett said. “You have to come out and perform.”
