St. Anthony and St. Patrick appear headed for a collision between unbeaten teams in the unofficial national championship March 10.
The Friars, the No. 2 team in the nation, improved to 21-0 Monday with a 55-39 victory at Linden.
Rutgers-bound point guard Myles Mack had 15 points, 3 steals and 2 assists and uncommitted junior point guard Kyle Anderson posted 7 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and 6 steals. Rutgers coach Mike Rice and Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard were both in attendance.
“I think Myles pretty much is showing why he’s going to be an impact player at the Big East level,’’ Friars coach Bob Hurley told reporters. “He’s very difficult to get up to guard and that second guy, Anderson, is a matchup nightmare because he assists in handling the ball. They take most of the pressure off the other guys.”
Linden had lost to Plainfield and St. Patrick last week but beat Montrose Christian (Md.), the No. 4 team in the nation, Friday night at the PrimeTime Shootout.
“Let’s be honest, this was the fourth major game they played in nine days,’’ Hurley said. “They did not have the legs they normally would have today and we were the wrong opponent because we had a little more rest than they did.’’
St. Patrick, the No. 1 team in the nation, also improved to 21-0 Sunday with a 73-61 victory over St. Thomas More.
“Unless you’ve been living under a rock, St Pat’s is looming down the road in a few weeks,” Hurley said recently.
