Pittsburgh junior guard Ashton Gibbs will not play Saturday night when the No. 4 Panthers visit No. 9 Villanova, but is expected to return either Wednesday against South Florida or Saturday against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.
“South Florida,” a source close to Gibbs said.
A team source said Gibbs “will not play” against the Wildcats and expected that Gibbs “can come back late next week.’
Jacqui Gibbs, Ashton’s mother, said her son was ready to play Saturday.
“He wants to play tonight [at Villanova] because it’s such a big game,” she said Saturday by phone. “He says he feels fine but they are just being cautious.”
Gibbs, Pitt’s leading scorer, injured his left MCL after grabbing a rebound in a Feb. 5 win over Cincinnati.
ZAGSBLOG first reported Feb. 6 that he would miss 10-14 days. The 14-day window would end on the day of the St. John’s game.
