NEW YORK –During St. John’s stunning 93-78 upset of No. 3 Duke Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, a group of little boys in St. John’s jerseys tried to get Kyrie Irving’s attention by shouting his name toward the Duke bench.

Irving didn’t acknowledge them and remains glued to the bench for the foreseeable future because of the toe injury suffered Dec. 4 against Butler.

“We’re not looking for him to come back, we’re looking for him to get well,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Grennan to Seton Hall

Sean Grennan, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound point guard from Toms River (NJ) Monsignor Donovan, has verbally committed to Seton Hall for 2011.

Grennan initially committed to Davidson last summer, but was denied academic acceptance in September, according to Joe Fagan, his coach with the New Jersey Shore Shots.

Fagan said La Salle, Charlotte, St. Louis and Fordham were also recently involved.

Marvin Williams of the Atlanta Hawks has been suspended two games without pay for throwing punches and fighting with Shawne Williams of the Knicks.

Shawne Williams has been suspended one game without pay for throwing a punch during the altercation.

The incident occurred with 43.7 seconds remaining in the fourth period of
the Hawks’ 111-102 win Friday over the Knicks at Philips Arena in Atlanta.

Marvin Williams also fell and rolled into the right knee of Knicks star Amar’e Stoudemire in the third quarter. Stoudemire has a sprained knee and was initially listed as questionable for Sunday. Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni later changed his status to probable.

Mack, St. Anthony Win in Battle of Big East Point Guards

NEW YORK – Jabarie Hinds and Myles Mack seem destined for a Big East rivalry for years to come.

With Hinds headed to West Virginia and Mack to Rutgers, the two point guards are slated for annual showdowns for the next several years.

But on Friday night, Mack got the best of Hinds when unbeaten St. Anthony, No. 2 in the USA Today Super 25, beat Mount Vernon, 60-47, at LIU-Brooklyn to advance to the championship game of the SNY Invitational.

“It was a matchup we had built for a lot of years,” said the 5-foot-9 Mack, who scored 12 points and dished 2 assists in the win. “He played very good the second half; he got his shots off. But we won the game so that’s all that matters.”
