NEW YORK — While the future may be bright for the St. John’s basketball program, Saturday was a tough day for its prospective stars.

Three 2011 commits — Maurice Harkless, Sir’Dominic Pointer and Dwight Meikle — lost a pair of games at the Big Apple Invitational with Johnnies head coach Steve Lavin and his staff looking on.

“I don’t think I played well at all,” Harkless said after scoring 14 points on 5 of 15 shooting to go with 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks in South Kent’s 86-70 loss to Notre Dame Prep at Baruch College.

NEW YORK — After spending the afternoon at the Big Apple Basketball Invitational at Baruch College, here’s a look at six of the top uncommitted players who excelled today:

**Devin Coleman, 6-3 2011 G, Friends’ Central (Pa.)

Coleman was named MVP after notching game-highs of 30 points  and 12 rebounds in Friends’ 63-50 victory over Quality Education (N.C).  He was 8 of 14 from the field, 2 of 2 from 3 and a perfect 12 of 12 from the line. The play of the game was Coleman’s flying one-handed dunk at the end of the third period.

Coleman says he’s qualified and listed St. Joe’s, Siena, Penn State, Clemson, La Salle and Rhode Island.

PISCATAWAY, N.J.Austin Freeman has had a rough go of it in the Big East.

Just like his team, he has struggled.

Georgetown lost three straight and floundered under the burden of being a top-10 team with their annual January swoon.

Freeman hadn’t played up to the expectations of a pre-season Big East Player of the Year.

But Saturday at the RAC, both parties woke up from their winter hibernation.

NEW YORK — In his lone season at Kentucky, DeMarcus Cousins was part of a team that won 35 games and lost just 3.

Less than halfway into his rookie season in the NBA, his Sacramento Kings club has won just 9 games while losing 28.

“It’s been a tough process,” the 6-foot-11 Cousins said after putting up 16 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks in the Kings’ 93-83 win Friday over the Knicks at MSG.

“I don’t want to say I’m getting used to it because nobody wants to get used to losing. I’m kind of taking a positive take to it. I mean, I know we’re growing as a team, we’re a young team, we’re full of potential. Let’s just get better every game and that’s what we’re doing.”
